Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a legislative process.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the answer representing him in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for several factors including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused just days after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the court they planned to submit multiple legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, arguing the prosecution was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully assigned to handle the case.

James Comey's case was initially overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under pressure from the former president after his investigation into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director appeared in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a government attorney who the previous administration dismissed.

After listening to the judge read his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he comprehended the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the court.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about several months into Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was leading an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing political contender the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors claim the former director lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

Via social media the former director published to his Instagram after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"My family and I have understood for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a court case."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump shared on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and others.
