Significant Web Outage Impacts Numerous Sites and Apps

An extensive internet failure has affected numerous online platforms and apps worldwide, as users reporting troubles connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The disrupted services include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed operations such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring security home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted as well as its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with also reports of difficulties reaching the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring customers took to online platforms to state their doorbells were failing.

Just within Britain, reports of issues on particular platforms reached the thousands for every service.

Amazon reported that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the US at the cloud division, a section that provides essential online framework for a host of firms, who rent out capacity on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the world’s largest online services platform.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), the company announced “elevated error rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the US. The ripple effect seemed to disrupt services globally, with the Downdetector site showing issues with the same sites in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on internet outages, further indicated a surge in outages on the start of the week, including several cases found in Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the outage originated.
