Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Dramatic Overtime Triumph
The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the game-winning baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defense," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the game, the team's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were presented with their championship rings.
The Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the road team.
The Lakers were without the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
